Today the world communicates through social media besides verbal and written communication. With AI increasingly shaping the discourse, it is no longer a given that what is being communicated is truth backed by facts.
Most people now gain their knowledge from online material, often generated through AI tools, while offline reading has taken a back seat. The information carried is often based on half-truths, and AI has a tendency to hallucinate and to produce facts and figures that match what the reader wants to hear.
The recent student protests and violence at two University campuses in Punjab highlight the consequences. Social media posts about the rape and disappearance of girl students spread rapidly and, before the facts could be established, emotions ran high and led to confrontation, arson and violence across both campuses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For organisations and institutions, the lesson is clear. In a crisis, an unverified story can take hold long before the facts are known. Communicating verified information quickly, through credible channels, is now essential to protecting reputation. Equally, the voices we rely on need care, since many social media influencers are not experts and their opinions should not be treated as fact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There is, however, reason for optimism. The recent Gen Z protests in Delhi against Examination Paper leaks showed a generation that is articulate, aware of its rights and able to use social media responsibly to have its demands met by the government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The same medium that spreads misinformation can also build informed engagement.
