There are thousands of PR agencies, from one-person shops to global networks. Most pitch decks look alike. These nine questions show the difference.

  1. Who will actually run my account? Meet the person who will pitch your story day to day, not only the partner at the pitch meeting.
  2. Have you worked in my sector? A fintech, a hospital and a cement company need different requirements, different issues and different rules.
  3. How will you measure success? Agree on measurables (placements in named outlets, share of voice, leads or investor meetings) before you start. Raw clip counts aren’t enough.
  4. Besides media, what else do you do? Ask them for other stakeholder engagement tools as well as senior executive visibility planks.
  5. What happens in a crisis? Ask whether they have handled one and how fast they respond outside office hours.
  6. Can you show work that is a few years old? Average relationship length tells you whether clients stay.
  7. Do you understand investor communication? If you are listed or planning an IPO, your PR and IR messages must match.
  8. What does the first 90 days look like? A good agency gives you a written plan: messages, targets, calendar.
  9. What is in the retainer, and what costs extra? Events, monitoring tools, travel and content production are often billed separately.
